Insight at the electroslag process for better morphology of titanium deposits


Kroll process for more than 50 years is a titanium-based production technology. The primary product of titanium extraction is a titanium sponge, which requires complicated processing. A variation of the Kroll process for the producing titanium/titanium aluminium alloys and intermetallics is developed. The proposed technology is based on metallothermic reduction of titanium tetrachloride and utilizes a molten flux layer acting as a smart semipermeable liquid membrane. The intent is to improve the morfology of the titanium deposits in the Kroll process by depositing titanium in molten form with the aim to potentially produce titanium/titanium aluminium alloys more economically.
