Research branches in environmental processes

Physical oceanography

Coastal hydro- and morphodynamics

Harbour engineering

Rivers hydraulics and hydrodynamics

Water quality

Hydrogeology

Specific research areas:

  • The measurements of physical fields in the Gulf of Riga, rivers and reservoirs (jointly with Latvian Fisheries Research Institute)
  • Models of the dynamics for the vertical structure of physical fields in water basins (T, S, exchange on atmosphere/ocean interface)
  • The modelling of non-steady horizontal physical fields (waves, currents, passive admixtures, E. Coli, load transport, morphodynamics) in coastal zone*
  • Operational modelling of hydrodynamics of the Gulf of Riga
  • Modelling of the physical fields in rivers*
  • Integral long-term models of the littoral drift
  • Synthesis of artificial typical and critical forcing data sets for prognostic (short, seasonal and long-term) calculations
  • The modelling and visualisation of groundwater filtration processes in 3D geological structures*
  • The water quality modelling (BOD, COD, oxygen, nutrients, food chain)*
  • The water quality research (jointly with Institute of Biology) in rivers
  • The development of net-based information technologies for joining data assimilation systems (data providers), mathematical models (modelers) and decision-making (end-users) (jointly with Brandenburg University of Technology)
  • The design and building of oceanographic equipment (jointly with “Baltic Instruments, Ltd.”)
