Simulation of Liquid Metal Flows and Induction Heating Using Open Source Tools

ABOUT
MHD Modelling School brings together professional lecturers, PhD students and open-source simulation software users from the fields of applied magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and induction heating of metals. It is an intensive hands-on course with the focus on contemporary tools modelling tools for industrial processes. The course also covers experimental methods used for verification of numerical models.
Hands-on sessions showcase open-source simulation software: Elmer, GetDP, OpenFOAM, EOF-Library. Pre- and post-processing packages Salome and ParaView are introduced.
Students receive tutorials and supporting materials for simulation exercises.
COURSE STRUCTURE
MHD Modelling School is a 5-day intensive course. The lectures will take place in the morning, followed by hands-on sessions in the afternoon (see the agenda) and time dedicated to individual project work to be presented at the end of the course. Individual consultations are provided on demand during work on individual assignments.
Training session and project work are organized in several parallel groups. Students choose one of the following thematic groups:
- Induction heating
- Electromagnetic mixing and pumping
- Quasi-levitation and free surface dynamics
- Bubble flows in magnetic field
- Electrovorticial flows

LOCATION
University of Latvia, located in Riga, is the largest higher education and research institution in Latvia. It has > 14000 students and > 1100 academic staff. In total, there are > 300 researchers in Physics at the University of Latvia.
Since early 2019, the Department of Physics has relocated to a new Science building within the Tornakalns campus. The University of Latvia will celebrate its 100th birthday in September 2019 (Est. 1919).

Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia. With a ~700k population, it is also the largest city in the Baltic states. Riga is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and its architecture reflects the various periods of the city′s history since 1201, from the traditional wooden architecture of the city center to one of the world's largest and best-preserved collections of Art Nouveau buildings.
"Riga" airport is busiest in the Baltic states with almost 90 direct flight destinations and convenient access by bus and car (18 min from campus, 21 min from the center of Riga).
